Carburetors are used in older petrol engines to mix the air-fuel ratio for combustion. Some carburetors are equipped with an economizer device for special operating conditions. Let’s look at a previous year JE exam question from UPRVNL JE 2016.
I’ve explained this concept with diagrams showing fuel flow in different carburetor circuits in my video.
(d) Power enrichment / शक्ति संवर्धन के लिए
The economizer device in a carburetor is used to provide an extra-rich fuel mixture during high load or full-throttle conditions.
Why?
Under heavy load, the engine requires more power.
A richer air-fuel ratio improves combustion and prevents overheating.
The economizer bypasses the main jet restriction, supplying more fuel to the venturi.
During normal running → The main jet supplies the correct mixture.
During high load → The economizer valve opens, allowing extra fuel to flow.
Cold starting → Choke is used.
Idling → Idle circuit is used.
Acceleration → Accelerator pump is used.
High load / full throttle → Economizer is used for power enrichment.
Tip: If the question has “economizer” in a carburetor, think “extra fuel during high load = power enrichment.”
